So why mention it?

Simply because a couple of articles back I opened up a new section for admin themes. At the moment it only contains my own but I think that is about to change. Textpattern 4.2.0 will come complete with a built-in admin theming facility so you will be able to try out existing themes with a simple flick of a drop-down box, not to mention creating your own.

Alongside that, as if it weren’t enough, numerous UI tags have been added to the admin page templates to make it a lot easier for plug-ins to add, subtract or move fields to their heart’s content, there is a facility for unlimited custom fields and the ability to run several sites from a single Textpattern install.

So if you have the patience by all means wait for the official release. If you don’t then go grab the SVN.

Oh and if you are wondering what happened to 4.1.0, that designation was given to the experimental “crockery” version which is currently moth-balled.

Textpattern 4.0.7 is due out any time now and it is a truly massive release.

The parser has been completely overhauled and will now allow “tag-within-tags” without the need for a plug-in as well as allowing nesting of a wrapping tag within itself.

There are new tags such as <txp:modified />, <txp:expires />, <txp:variable /> and <txp:if_variable>. That’s just a short-list.

The combination of the new parser and the <txp:variable /> tags gives Textpattern a flexibility which I think is pretty much unmatched elsewhere.

To celebrate the release I shall be offering a new theme that makes use of this expanded flexibility and gives you some ideas on how to use it plus I shall have an updated version of the “A Bit Blue” admin theme that takes account of the changes made to the back-end.

Watch this space.

Although I’m not expecting to see as many of these as front-end themes the idea of having them here is that, at the very least, they can all be in one place rather than dotted around the planet as they currently are.

Anyway, If you have an admin theme you can contact me by email and I will get it uploaded for you.

I’ve recently had a bit of a web holiday so thebombsite.com has been off-line. I and it are now back so my ported templates have their demos back. I have also modified my site so that any downloads over there are pulled from here and I have added download totals from thebombsite.com to those that you can see on this site. This should give a truer reflection of popularity and all I have to do now is sort out what is happening on the TXP Resources site.

I have many ports over at thebombsite.com that aren’t shown here so I hope to slowly move stuff across as I get the demos sorted out. I shall also look for some new templates as there is a distinct lack of them since the competition finished!
